Where can I leave baggage in Delhi?
posted in Travel FAQ.

If you are like me you will be arriving in India with more gear than you can comfortably carry all of the time. I generally have two phases to my trips: some wandering in the mountain regions where I need walking boots, heavy sleeping bag and other warm gear, then some ambling and relaxing in the southern areas of the country where I definitely have no need of such things (or the chunky rucsac they are carried in). As such, I need to leave bags for weeks at a time, somewhere cheap and secure. While the railway station is very good if you have a ticket, it quickly becomes expensive for storage of more than a week. The airport left luggage facility is even more pricey. You may find your hotel can offer storage for free or a nominal fee. This is easiest to do in Nepal (Kathmandu or Pokhara), where it is almost expected that patrons will want to store gear for the time they are trekking.

From recent information (September 2018) it seems the Pahar Ganj luggage storage facilities are not accepting any more deposits. At one time, a couple of places down an alley near the Ajay Guest House (my regular venue was called The Luggage Room) offered cheap and reliable storage for any time up to six months. This appears to be due to the buildings being used for different purposes in the future. At present, it seems your options in Delhi are limited to (in ascending order of cost) certain hotels or guest houses, the railway station, the Delhi Metro left luggage or the airport. The latter two will prove expensive for anything longer than 24 hours.

The best plan for leaving your bags for more than a few days is to deal with your hotel. The establishments listed below have been used by travellers and have received good feedback. However, costs are completely variable (budget on Rs. 10 to 30 per day) and depend on how large your bag is, how long you plan to leave it plus your bargaining ability. It is probably best to phone around a few first and then decide where you wish to stay.

Hotel/ Guest House Location (Specific) Phone Number
Bloomrooms Paharganj (Arakashan Road) +91 11 4017 4017

In the busy season of November to April many smaller hotels’ storage rooms are likely to be stacked high with travellers’ bags, so it’s a good idea to remember the colour/description of your bag to enable you to reclaim it faster. I suggest taking a digital picture of it, first on its own, and then in its position in the storeroom. If you are keeping your bag over about two weeks, ask them to try to leave it in the same place as it was deposited. Having a picture (or a photographic memory) will make your searching easier.
