12. Age is getting to me; it is becoming increasingly difficult
getting up from a squat (or even from a low chair) so I'm avoiding Asian toilets
as much as possible these days.
11. Squatters rool!
10. The human body is designed to squat, they even had an info campaign is
Australia a few years ago saying that women should sit on the toilet with their
palms flat on the ground as its better for your bladder - basically squatting
position but sitting on the throne. Plus most women end up doing 'the hover'
anyway 'cos we don't want to sit on a public toilet.
9. I hate them
8. I love Chinese style toilets- they use the toilet paper usually too, and you
flush with the feet after you squat, but I never got used to the Muslim ones
(Malaysia, Turkey) which had the hoses and water everywhere, soooooo wet and my
clothes all got wet...
7. one just has to get used to it, that's the main thing. plus, it looks not
'modern' enough for most people i guess. in fact especially if used in public
spaces they are a thousand times more hygienic than the western ones with piss
all over the place because no-one would really sit one one.
6. For female traveller, hope you provide some toilet information (eg, finding
western toilet or hygienic toilet) in a popular destination in Asia.
5. I'd need a book. As I've got some great squat toilet stories after 30 years
of travel, including my first encounter with one in Switzerland in 1970 which I
didn't know how to use! By 1975 and my overland trip to India I was a pro.
4. I don't like Asian squat toilets, purely because the ones I've seen (or
avoided) are public ones - hence, disgusting. You may need to take into account
that opinions may be based on public, as opposed to private, squat toilets.
3. I mostly have experience in China. In my opinion squat toilets are better
there, even if they are dirty, because you don't need to sit on them. In China,
when there is a Western style toilet, I will still choose for the squat toilet
because not all Chinese know how to use a Western one.
2. Biggest disadvantage ... people who make a mess that don't clean up ... that
then gets on the bottom of my trousers.
1. I don't know why its such an issue. And I am always baffled by people who
profess to not knowing how to use one - I think its blindingly obvious. And I
think squat toilets stink far too much far too often, considering how easy they
are supposed to be keep clean, I don't like the way they are always surrounded
by mud and with water all over the joint. I hate that. Western toilets are very
easy to clean. You can just as readily slosh a bucket of water over them as you
can a squat toilet and you can't really catch anything from sitting on a toilet
seat. If people don't shit or pee on the seat, what's the problem. They are much
more comfortable, providing they are not too high. True they use more water but
the Greeks do well with sloshing a bucket of water down them so long as you
don't put the loo paper down the loo.
