Much more remains to be done in this area though. 2. Changing money, credit cards... 3. The roads in many places 4. internet rail booking, discount flights, available clean drinking water, ATMs, for a few. It has been almost 40 years between first and current visit, so I'm not including everything, of course, even if my faltering memory permitted :) 5. roads 6. train comfort 7. same, experience in travel helped 8. As female traveller in some areas can go unnoticed and untroubled. English more common between 25yrs and now. Treated water. Internet cafes. Opportunities for less cast discrimination, more freedom for Indian women. There are just so many more cars now. 2. Plastic waste strewn everywhere, general traffic chaos in cities and small towns, a rampant consumer culture for those with money plugging India into the same "endless growth" model as the West. I dislike the spread of mobile phones to even some remote hill stations these days. Once you could escape from these damned things! Oh, and Brits need to get a visa nowadays... 3. The behaviour of tourists 4. crowded trains and the necessity to book well ahead. increased numbers of LP-type tourists saturating some places, and package tourists and other short-termers (including Indian tourists), who have pretty well destroyed the old ambience of Goa. 5. nothing I can think of 6. touts/conmen 7. tourists 8. Pollution with plastic!!!!!!!!! Beautiful cows eating plastic and die slow and painful. The difference between poverty and riches more noticeable, although growing middle class. The dying-off of vultures. The sad plight of the street dogs. 9. more vehicles 10. Obviously more people and cars and the ensuing pollution. First trip was in 87 second trip in 2004 11. The lack of interest in you. People no longer come up to you for a conversation without an ulterior motive. The surge in backpackers who take little interest in the local culture but who frequent hedonistic tourist ghettos & spend up big. The surge in backpacker numbers. Population, traffic & pollution (noise, air, water). [Total Answers - 8] Click here to read 1. India is still the greatest place for a European to visit! Warm, friendly, colorful, terrific food for us vegetarians. 2. I still visit India for the sense of unreal craziness that's in daily life a lot of the time. Indians haven't yet conformed... 3. Well, I'm a lot older now and am perhaps tempted to look back with some fondness to times when I still had youth and adventurous spirit on my side. Fortunately, time has also brought a bit more financial security so can mitigate many hardships with a jump in standards i.e. AC class rail, occasional flights to cover long distances, and improved accommodation. Since I am now a more-or-less winter resident of Goa, having a house with kitchen and decent plumbing makes it easier to maintain good hygiene, etc., as well as some isolation to the late-night noise of the beach areas. 4. The way I wanted to, and did, experience India have remained surprisingly the same over a 15 year interval. My sense of adventure was and is HIGH. That it has not changed is from my point of view a positive thing. Also not changed, still great value for money. Some questions were not easy to answer because I visited two very different regions. Second time in the south and people seemed friendlier than in the north -- may be region, may be time difference, can't say. Western oriented accom seems to have been improved somewhat, but I never needed western ammenities. So from my point of view no change for what I use. Quite content with what's there for 'local' consumption (ie Indian travelers/tourists/pilgrims etc). Regarding travel/tickets, etc I usually did things myself anyway, and see no major change. Typical budget independent traveler. So I do not know if the system is now more (western) user-friendly. 5. India is eternal 6. India is still the love of my life after 30 years. 7. The country still provides delights off the beaten path. Still an amazing diversity of wildlife in small areas within a country over-burdened with people. 8. India needs to be educated about, cleanliness, quality of life, how not to use plastic, how to deal with population growth, how not adopt western culture, how good for them to stick to good old ways and being eco friendly *Thanks for taking the time to answer!*
