Since over 70% of visitors to this site are
from the USA, I hardly need to expand on the common slang use of the word
toke (to draw from a cannabis cigarette or pipe), but the origins of the
word are interesting. It derives perhaps from the Spanish tocar, which is
to touch or test, or from the vulgar Latin word toccare (also meaning to
touch). Thus we have the "touch zone" - a place to touch and be touched. When
did the word enter common use? Many etymologies suggest 1968. To me this
indicates another possible source of toke - Alice Babette Toklas,
(pronounced toke-lass) who is credited with bringing hash cookies to the
attention of the world in her
Alice B Toklas Cookbook in 1954 and immortalised in the
film, I Love You, Alice B Toklas.
I try to update the site more or less
continuously. You will be able to
see what's changed by clicking on
news zone on the left menu, or Site News in
the yellow box to the right on this page. Above that is the search box,
which you'll need if you came here from somewhere like Google, as the
tokezone scripts redirect visitors to this
page. A fancier version of the search tool can be accessed from any page by
using the search zone button on the left menu.
In a nutshell here is what each "zone" has in store: Over in the
download zone
you'll find programs for enhancing your online safety in a cybercafe, an
international rack of clocks and many more downloads with a travel bent, whilst
the travel zone
features information for
independent travellers who want to visit Asian countries (principally the Indian
subcontinent), and has hints and tips gathered from my own experience. In
the gallery zone you'll find pictures
(panoramas as well) from
my travels over 28 years in Asia, Australasia and Europe. In the
toke-card
zone you can
customise some of my photos with text, music and colours and send to friends,
and over in the tone
zone I try to give guidelines about your choices for music on the
move - iPods, portable speakers and the like. The
planet zone has links concerned with the environment, while the
ramble zone is a grab-bag listing of sites I
visited and liked.
If you use internet cafés while travelling,
you would do well to familiarise yourself with the threats to your online
privacy in the online zone
and safeguard your personal information. The maurice zone
has information about Steve Miller and his use of that enigmatic p-word, pompitous.
Some people called him Maurice, you see...
Despite the name
tokezone,
you'll find the site's primary focus isn't about using cannabis. If you're interested in
that subject, however, you'll almost certainly find something to tickle you in the
roll your zone.
If you'd like to give me
feedback on what is on the site (always welcome) or request features for future
updates, then please email me
here.
